The fact was revealed in the Panama Papers leaks in 2016. Sharif, 67, was ousted from power in July by the country’s Supreme Court. It’s relevant to know, no Pakistani prime minister has ever finished his or her term since the country’s founding in 1947. Sharif was overthrown by the army in 1999 during his second term. Mr. Sharif’s daughter, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who in recent months had become a senior leadership figure in the family’s political party, was indicted too, along with her husband, Muhammad Safdar.

Mr. Sharif’s supporters insist that the judiciary was overstepping its role and was carrying out a political vendetta on behalf of the military and Mr. Sharif’s rivals. Mr. Sharif was in London when he was indicted, visiting his wife, who is undergoing medical treatment. Upon his arrival, his vehicle was swarmed by thousands of supporters, in a show of continuing political support for the Sharif family and their political party, PML-N. Nawaz, through his representative Zafir Khan, Maryam and Safdar rejected the charges by pleading ‘not guilty’ and vowed to contest the case.
