The North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to speed up the development of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal during a military parade displaying the country’s intercontinental ballistic missiles. The country commemorated key state anniversaries by mobilising huge crowds to boost internal unity. But it was a motivation to show is nucleary arsenal. “The fundamental mission of our nuclear forces is to deter a war, but our nukes can never be confined to the single mission of war deterrent even at a time when a situation we are not desirous of at all is created on this land,” the North Korean leader declared. “If any forces try to violate the fundamental interests of our state, our nuclear forces will have to decisively accomplish its unexpected second mission,” Mr Kim said. His remarks suggest he will continue provocative weapons tests in a pressure campaign to wrest concessions from the US and its allies. The parade featured North Korea’s largest-known ICBM, the Hwasong-17. US and South Korean officials say there are signs of new construction at North Korea’s only known nuclear test site.

“The parade proved that North Korea has outwardly called for peace and dialogue over the last five years but in reality it focused on developing the means to threaten not only the Korean peninsula but north-east Asia and world peace,” deputy spokesman Won Il-hee told a briefing. North Korea’s ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs are banned by United Nations Security Council resolutions, which have imposed sanctions on the country. It is not known an immediate reaction pf the U.S. regarding Kim’s latest declarations.
