He is swaying his hips and arms to the 90s hit song “Macarena” and appears to be smiling and giggling throughout the dance, in the video which became viral on Internet. Western music and dancing is taboo in Saudi Arabia but such incidents in the past have not necessarily led to lengthy imprisonment or serious punishment. This time police arrested the young man preparing to refer him to prosecutors for disrupting traffic. He was also accused of “improper public behavior.” It is not clear what his nationality was.

Because of the lack of codified penal law in Saudi Arabia, officials and judges have broad discretion in the arrest and punishment. However the boy was released later without charge, after he and his legal guardian were summoned for questioning, said the interior ministry who specified: “They signed a written pledge that the teen will not engage in behavior that could endanger his life and the life of others again.” The clip of the boy dancing to the popular choreography has been shared thousands of times. It was believed to have been first posted in July 2016. Earlier this month a singer was arrested for “dabbing” during a concert in the south-west of the country.
