Suicide attack at the Bibi Fatima Shiite mosque in Kandahar, southern Afghanistan


A suicide attack at the Bibi Fatima Shiite mosque in Kandahar, southern Afghanistan, with big explosions, killed at least 37 worshipers on Friday. Many dozens were wounded. Four suicide bombers entered the mosque , two detonating explosives at a security gate to clear the way for the other two to enter the compound, where prayers were ongoing. Taliban special forces arrived to secure the site. Friday prayers are typically attended by around 500 people. The United Nations “condemns (the) latest atrocity targeting a religious institution & worshippers. Those responsible need to be held to account,” the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan wrote on Twitter. Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid also condemned the incident in a statement.


Interior ministry spokesman Sayed Khosti said on Twitter: “We are saddened to learn that an explosion took place in a mosque of the Shia brotherhood in the first district of Kandahar city in which a number of our compatriots were martyred and wounded.”No claim of responsibility for the blast has yet been made. Last Friday, at least 20 people were killed and 90 others wounded in a blast from a suicide bomber at another Shia mosque in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz and ISIS-K claimed responsibility. Taliban have pledged to protect Afghanistan’s Shiite minority but there were no results yet. Shiites are targeted again in deadly attacks.
