One killed, 40 injured in a train accident in Pakistan


A 18 cars passenger train, the 15-Up Karachi Express, which departed from Karachi for the eastern city of Lahore derailed in southern between the Rohri and Sangi stations early Sunday killing at least one passenger and injuring 40 others. Two critically injured people have been moved to the hospital in the district. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the derailment. The derailed compartments fell into a ditch owing to speeding, according to initial investigation, Commissioner of Sukkur district Shafiq Mahesar told the media.Darkness and the remote location of the derailment caused delays in rescue efforts. Rescue work on the Karachi Express had been conducted and completed by railway personnel, private rescue teams and army personnel.


Railway Minister Azam Sawati told a local television station that the accident was being investigated and the government would provide financial compensation to the heirs of deceased woman and all the injured. Strict action will be taken against the train driver if found guilty of negligence. The traffic was flowing on a single line, and about 10 to 15 trains have been delayed due to the accident.
