Many civilians including women and children were killed. The target of the attack , which officials said was a suicide car bombing , was not immediately known. No group including the Taliban insurgents has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.. It was one of the worst attacks Kabul has seen since the drawdown of foreign forces at the end of 2014. Several embassies are in the area. No reports of foreign embassy staff being wounded or killed had emerged yet but the Chinese and French embassies said their buildings were among those damaged. Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack. “The terrorists, even in the holy month of Ramadan, the month of goodness, blessing and prayer, are not stopping the killing of our innocent people,” Ghani said.
