The process adopted by such companies is often called “scareware”. Basically an operator from such a company called people in U.S. and tricked them into believing their PC was infected with a virus. The person calling often times claimed to work at Microsoft or at some other big corporation that worked with PC security.
After the potential “victim” was tricked into believing his/her PC was infected it didn’t take long until they were charged with up to $450 for removing a malware that did not exist in the first place.
Six tech support companies that operated such scams with people from U.S. closed their activities after a U.S. judge ordered so. The companies were mainly based in India and are now charged with unfair, deceptive commercial practices and with illegally calling numbers from U.S. Do Not Call Registry.
