A highway pile-up accident involved 56 cars in China and killed 17

The snowy and rainy weather is believed to have been a factor causing the accident. Poor visibility and icy roads are blamed. Some cars and trucks were completely crashed. One truck was thrown through the air, landing on the cars in front of it, and others dangled off the side of a nearby cliff. Cranes were brought to the scene to move the heavier vehicles. 12 hours after accidents the road was not completely cleared. The road remained blocked for a long time in both directions. Officials said they are conducting an investigation to understand the causes of the crash. China’s highways remain the most dangerous in the world. Traffic accidents are common in China, with the World Health Organization estimating that more than 260,000 people were killed on the country’s roads in 2013.
