When police started turning back people from the overcrowded bridge some of them  feared that the bridge had collapsed and they started running for safety. Nineteen people were killed on the spot and five others of their injuries at a hospital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was deeply saddened by the tragedy. The victims were followers of religious leader Jai Gurudev. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Minister Akhilesh Yadav announced Rs 2 lakhs each for kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 each for the critically injured. Congress President Sonia Gandhi  has instructed the UP Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), Varanasi DCC and Congress workers to provide all possible assistance to the people. This is not the first time that a stampede occurs at religious events in India. Many pilgrims became victims and the authorities had not yet learned the lesson about this.
