11 pilgrims dead in a stampede at a temple in India, dozens injured

Police officials said the pilgrims were standing in two long queues. The pilgrims take holy Ganga water from Sultanganj near Bhagalpur in Bihar and cover about 98 kms on feet to offer the water to Lord Shiva at the Baba Dham temple. Thousands of people tried to force their way into the temple when its gates were opened. Those sleeping in the kilometers-long queue were trampled as others pushed towards the doors Similar incidents have taken place in the past in the town of Deoghar where thousands of devotees flock to the area every year in August.
