He was sent to hospital where his leg was amputated. A few days ago an escalator in China killed a young mother. Just a couple of days later, a one-year-old toddler was dragged into one of the moving staircases in Wuzhou, crushing his arm. During the last year, 49 escalators incidents were recorded in China and as a result, 37 people died. Authorities consider only eight deaths were caused by equipment problems. Expressed in percent calculated from the 1.3 billion Chinese people this is a very low rate but we need to consider at the same time that any individual life is unique. More, if such accidents can occur, any resident person or traveling in China could be the next victim of the unsafe escalators. People’s concerns over China’s “man-eating” machines are motivated.
