Just a couple of days later, a one-year-old toddler was dragged into one of the moving staircases in Wuzhou, crushing his arm. During the last year, 49 escalators incidents were recorded in China and as a result, 37 people died. Authorities consider only eight deaths were caused by equipment problems. Expressed in percent calculated from the 1.3 billion Chinese people this is a very low rate but we need to consider at the same time that any individual life is unique.
