The local government has organized fitness events for the past four years, with regular exercise programs being held during the weekends. The instructors from the Philippine Zumba Network practiced for 2 months to prepare for this attempt. The event was part of Mayor Benhur Abalos birthday celebrations. Zumba is a dance fitness activity created by a Colombian dancer in the 1990s, involving aerobic exercises and dance choreography. According to Guinness, the largest Zumba record was first achieved on Jan. 1, 2011 by 638 participants at an event organized by the Greater Wichita YMCA in Wichita, Kansas.
The previous world record was set in the Filipino city of Cebu, some 843km away from Mandaluyong, in 2014, and involved an impressive 8,232 health enthusiasts.
