Because the water flow in Pakistani’s main rivers is thirtyfive percent below what it used to be in the previous years. And these numbers are rising.
Pakistan only has 4 major crops and besides the above mentioned ones it also produces wheat. Sugarcane, cotton and rice are planted and grown in a single season and a lot of workforce is involved in the whole process. Ten percent of the country-s economic output is generated by the employed workforce that works in this area.
The only alternative left only for some farmers is to use water from tube-wells. High fuel prices coupled with the energy crisis make this option a hard one as tube-wells rely on diesel generators.
