Previous contact between China and Taiwan has been conducted only through semi-official foundations or through political parties. Wang Yu-chi, of Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, invited his mainland Chinese counterpart to visit Taiwan to better understand its society.
Taiwan and China have different visions. Chinese authorities consider Taiwan as a breakaway province and manifested even to use force for the reunification. On the other part, Taiwan calls itself as “the
Republic of China.”
The historical meeting took place in Nanjing. Two Taiwan reporters with the mission to cover the event were excluded from the delegation from departing. The visit is expected to last until Friday and it’s supposed to have an important contribution to relax relations even any specific document will not be signed. This will remain referred as the first government-to-government contact.
