An explosion killed five at a Mitsubishi Materials plant


A number of highly volatile chemicals including hydrogen and chlorine are used in the process to manufacture polymers. First investigation revealed that maintenance crews were cleaning out a heat exchanger used in the production of silicon products. The cause of the explosion was not yet determined.
The accident was at 220 miles (350 km) west of Tokyo but no dangerous substances escaped into the air.
Mitsubishi Materials is a division of Mitsubishi Corporation and produces various automotive, electronics, construction and engineering products.
Statistically, deaths from industrial accidents in Japan have declined over the last 20 years to about 1,000 a year.
Mitsubishi Materials, headquartered in Tokyo, has over 22,000 employees and operations across the world, including in the US. They are known as very competitive.
