A strong 6.1 earthquake killed many people in Sumatra


The quake was located around 34 miles from the city of Bireun. It was very strong for about 15 seconds but it was more than 2 minutes long in total. This was evaluated as a major damaging earthquake but it occurred in a sparsely populated area. The worst damage occurred in the village Lampahan. A power failure also happened. Two big aftershocks followed after a few hours. The quake produced material destructions (at least 22 houses and buildings are damaged.) Even the second floor of a hospital has collapsed.
Among those who died six children count. Many others were trapped on a mosque collapsed.

This earthquake produced in the region Aceh. Nine years ago, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake in the same area caused a tsunami that killed 200,000 people.

At the time of the earthquake a meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum was organized in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province.
