Earthquake of Magnitude 6.5 hits Taiwan

It was relatively a shallow earthquake with 6 miles depth. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude of the earthquake was reported as 6.5.

The epicenter of the earthquake was close to the Jenai township of Nantou County. The county is located approximately 155 miles south of capital Taipei.  Reports suggest that, shoppers at a 12-story departmental store ran out screaming after the quake shook the store for almost a minute.

According to Taiwan television, the earthquake caused a gas explosion at the heart of the island, but no details were provided by the TV centre.  Residents of the city also complained of shaking of the house, but confirmed that nothing fell off.

Taiwan being close to the fire region of seismic activity is earthquake prone. But, majority of these earthquake cause minor damages. The earthquake in 1999 killed 2300 people in Nantou county of Taiwan.
