A part of a footbridge collapsed presumably because of the large crowds that flooded the local train station Sunday evening. This is when the accident began.

After a stampede broke out, the lives of tens of thousands of people that were at the Allahabad train station at that time were endangered. Mass Media believes as many as 20 people died at the Festival but until now only ten people were found and pronounced dead and around thirty others were injured.

Around 30 million people were expected to take a dip in the Holy Rivers Gangers, Saraswati and Yamuna at one of the holiest days chosen for baths in the Sangam. It is believed that dipping in the river on one of the holy days can wash away anyone’s sins.
