Judge Masipa also sentenced the athlete to an additional three years in prison, wholly suspended, for the second count of a firearm contravention. He is expected to be transferred to Pretoria Central prison, now known as the Kgosi Mampuru II correctional facility. “The following is what I consider is a sentence that is fair and just both to society and the accused,” Judge Masipa said.

The State Prosecuting Authority and the ANC Women’s league announced the possibility to appeal. This can happen in the next two weeks. Steenkamp family say punishment “is the right sentence.” Barry Roux, Pistorius’ lawyer, expressed hope that his client could be released after 10 months to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

The case has brought global attention due to the past sportive performance of the young man known as the “Blade Runner” for racing on prosthetic legs as an Olympian, argument considered as one asking respect even in this High Court.
