Since not all Google Chrome users experienced these problems, developers and normal browser users worldwide began wondering why did Google Chrome crash every time for certain configuration. Tim Steelse, a Google engineer, confirmed that the reported Google Crashes had as their root cause the Sync web service.
Google’s 20 minute downtime was due to a misconfiguration of its servers that were in charge of doing load-balancing. The Google Sync web service was also affected by the downtime. It seems that Google Chrome was not able to face this special scenario with its Sync web service and thus Google Chrome abruptly shut down on all PCs that had Google Chrome installed with Sync. It is rather strange to see that a webpage problem propagated into a browser crash in the case of Google who has continuously worked on its browser in order to fix bugs and make it as reliable as possible.
