The group will “participate in a controlled, limited duration program,” and will not be working with the Pentagon’s most top secret systems, according to a news release. Every participant is required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number and a social security number or an employee identification number and the ability to complete required verification forms and must not reside in a country currently under U.S. trade sanctions. “I am confident that this innovative initiative will strengthen our digital defenses and ultimately enhance our national security,” Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in a statement. The initiative is being led by the Pentagon’s Defense Digital Service. The hackers will be allowed to target a predetermined system that is not part of its critical operations.
