The future of the SD memory cards will be the ultra capacity

Based on estimations made by the SD Association, the organisation that sets the standards for memory cards and now is previewing its latest development at the Mobile World Congress Asia in Shanghai, the new format will be able to increase storage capacity up to 128 terabytes.

The new 128 TB memory cards will be called SD Ultra Capacity (SDUC). It is not known however when they become available. The biggest hurdle for the companies to overcome will be probably the proct price. Previously, the maximum storage capacity available in memory cards was 2 TB with the SDXC, released back in 2010. The announcement means that soon, memory cards will be able to be used for devices and applications that move large amounts of data at high speeds, for example for mobile phones, gaming systems or cameras.

SD Express memory cards will deliver up to 985MBps transfer speeds. The SD Ultra Capacity will be available in microSD cards as well. The new SD Express will be offered on SDUC, SDXC and SDHC memory cards. Are you imagening that a such storage capacity will become available on smartphones ? Currently, there is a limited number of smartphones which are offering maximum storage expandability beyond 256GB."With SD Express we're offering an entirely new level of a memory card with faster protocols turning cards into a removable SSD," said Hiroyuki Sakamoto, SDA president.
