If your search has relevant results in your mail then why shouldn’t Google be able to show it to you with all the other results?
Mail extracts that will be displayed as search results can be expanded so that you can read your entire mail right from the search results. This is a sort of experiment similar to the ones we were used to see under Google Labs. Google will only allow one million people sign-up for this trial. Google plans to check if the newly announced feature will be liked or can be improved.
Google works a lot on improving its search results. From getting rid of spam, increasing relevancy to including local results. Who ever thought there is nothing new for Google to explore was wrong. If including mail search in web search proves to be a hit then who knows with what new feature will Google plan to impress us.
