The players are allowed to populate their island with the “Mii characters of family, friends or anyone else you can think of”. However, it’s not really „what you can think“ because the producer said in a statement that it will not allow gamers to play as gay characters in its life-simulation game. Immediately, a fan had launched a social media campaign urging Nintendo to allow this. Tye Marini, a gay 23-year old Nintendo fan from Arizona was unhappy because his virtual avatar was not able to marry in the game as he wanted, replicating in the game his real relationship. His „tragedy“ is described in a few words: „My only options are to marry some female Mii, to change the gender of either my Mii or my fiance’s Mii or to completely avoid marriage altogether and miss out on the exclusive content that comes with it.” In his opinion same-sex relationships were “more of an issue for this game“. Even though their decision was different, Nintendo company politely said in their answer „we will continue to listen and think about the feedback.“
