Maria Sharapova did the same thing one year ago in the previous Brisbane tournament when she withdrew because of injury. She recovered in time for the Australian Open but there she eventually lost the final against Victoria Azarenka. Now the twenty five year old Russian champion still has some time to prepare for the Australia Open where she has a great chance of becoming a tennis champion.
This recent injury also forced the number two ranked Sharapova to withdraw from an exhibition tournament from South Korea. Maria Sharapova related: “I had a minor inflammation in my collar-bone, and I sent the scans to a doctor in New York. He told me I couldn’t really do much overhead training for about a week”. She continued: “So to be fair, I haven’t really given myself a chance to pretty much hit any serves or anything over my head … So I just kind of ran out of time here.”
Sharapova then explained that her decision to withdraw from the Brisbane tournament is justified and that she didn’t want to jeopardize her chances.
