ESPN to broadcast US Open from 2015

But all of that is about to come to an end. On Thursday, sports channel ESPN announced that it would take charge of broadcasting the tournament from the year 2015. It will put an end to 46 years of CBS’s involvement with the tournament.

The sports channel ESPN has already attained the cable rights for the event in exchange of $825 million over a period of 11 years. The network has also vowed that every single match would be telecast live on ESPN, ESPN 2 or the ESPN 3.  President of ESPN is not willing to distinguish between cable TV and broadcast rather he said that, the sports rights are one of the most valuable commodities in media. Therefore, the distinction between the two is inconsequential.

The move to snatch away rights for the US open come just two years after the sporting network got hold of rights for the Wimbledon. It brought to an end to NBC’s 43 years of grip on this prestigious tournament.
