A teenage footballer under 18 collapsed during a match and died in Victoria, Australia

A junior player of the Castlemaine Football Netball Club died during an under-18s game in Victoria, Australia, on Saturday. The boy collapsed and was unresponsive during a game at the Kyneton Showgrounds. He died at the Kyneton Hospital. The incident occurred during the under-18s game between the Kyneton Tigers and Castlemaine Magpies. The exact circumstances of the death were yet to be determined, but the matter is not being treated as suspicious.

A Bendigo league game between the Castlemaine and Kyneton senior teams planned for later in the day was abandoned. Kyneton cancelled Rural Round celebrations taking place at the Showgrounds. “Incredibly saddening and devastating,” Greater Bendigo councillor Matthew Evans declared. Tributes poured in from sporting clubs across the state on Saturday.
