Every gold, silver and bronze Olympic and Paralympic medal awarded to athletes at next year’s games will be made using metals extracted from materials found in donated electronics and phones. There were obtained 71 pounds of gold, 7,700 pounds of silver and 4,850 pounds of bronze. Only to have an idea, among the massive haul of electronics was over 6 million mobile phones. The design of medals was granted to Olympic medal designer Junichi Kawanishi, who won a competition held by Tokyo 2020 that drew over 400 entries. “We hope that our project to recycle small consumer electronics and our efforts to contribute to an environmentally friendly and sustainable society will become a legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Games,” the organizers say.
There are some other interesting news about 2020 Summer Olympics. As an example, skateboarding events have been introduced for the 2020 Olympics, with two events: park and street. Another: in addition to the traditional 5-on-5 games, the Olympics will feature 3-on-3 basketball. Baskets scored inside the three-point arc will count as one point while shots from deep will be two points, and the first team to 21 points (or whichever team is leading after 10 minutes of play) wins. And more, and more.
