A teenage Mexican woman boxer died days after a knockout


A Mexican woman boxer, 18, died days after knockout in Montreal. Mexican welterweight Jeanette Zacarias Zapata participated at the GVM Gala International in Montreal on Saturday. She was knocked down in the fourth round against Marie Pier Houle and appeared to have a seizure after being dazed by a left uppercut and a right hook. She died at the Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur-de-Montreal. Houle issued a statement on her Facebook page on Sunday, saying that the outcome “really upset” her and that it was never her intention to seriously hurt an opponent.The Yvon Michel Group (GYM), which had organized Saturday’s gala at Montreal’s IGA Stadium, announced the news late Thursday.The WBC paid tribute to Zapata, saying: “The president of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaimán and the entire boxing family affiliated with the WBC, as well as all boxing, mourns this irreparable loss. GYM announced that it was indefinitely postponing a gala scheduled for Sept. 17 that was to feature Oscar Rivas and Marie-Ève Dicaire, out of respect for Zacarias Zapata.


Jeanette was married to her boyfriend Jovanni Martinez.
