Breakdancing became an official Olympic sport on Monday. This will happen at 2024 Paris Games, The International Olympic Committee decided. Skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing will make their Olympic debuts at the Tokyo Games, postponed to open on July 23, 2021. Breakdancing will be called breaking at the Olympics, as it was in the 1970s by hip-hop pioneers in the United States. It was proposed by Paris organizers almost two years ago after positive trials at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. In Paris, breaking has been given a prestige downtown venue. Breaking is an athletic style of street dance from the United States which mainly consists of four kinds of movement: toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes.
A practitioner of this dance is called a b-boy, b-girl, or breaker. Breaking was created by the African American youth in the early 1970s. There are many world championship for breaking. Breakers are predominantly male. In 2018, Japan’s B-Girl Ami became the first B-Girl world champion. In the past 50 years, various films have depicted the dance.
