If an asteroid of this large size would collide with Earth, then it would plunge the Earth to a mini ice age as the sun would be blocked by its materials causing the temperature to fall by as much as 8°C worldwide.  NASA scientists revealed that the ‘potentially hazardous’ will fly from a distance that is ten times the distance between earth and the moon, which is about 2.6 million miles or 4.2 million km.

The asteroid is orbiting at a speed of 76,000mph (34 km/s) making it approximately 16 times faster than the world’s quickest manned aircraft. The asteroid was first discovered in 2002. “We have been tracking this asteroid for over 14 years and know its orbit very accurately,” Paul Chodas, Manager, Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA, in California said in a statement. Asteroid 2002 AJ129 will be the biggest space rock to whiz past Earth this year.Astronomers will use Goldstone Radio Telescope in California to study its size, shape, and rotation effectively. Till now scientists have identified more than 800 asteroids of size larger than 1km wide that are expected to zoom past Earth in a close flyby, but neither of them poses an immediate threat to earth.
