The company Blue Origins of Jeff Bezos is proposing a massive new commercial space station called “Orbital Reef”

Blue Origin says it will create a new privately owned space station in orbit around the Earth. The company call it „a mixed-use business park” in space. It will be named and the hope is to be ready for use by the end of the 2020s. The station will open the next chapter of human space exploration and development by facilitating the growth of a vibrant ecosystem and business model for the future,” Blue Origin said Monday. As a commercial space station, it will have customers from space agencies and high-tech groups to countries that don’t have their own space programs because “now, anyone can establish an address in orbit.” The new space station will be able to host up to 10 people and will have roughly the same internal volume as the ISS. Boeing plans to design a research module on the station. The project is expensive and risky, likely costing in the tens of billions of dollars and requiring multiple safe launches.

Blue Origin and the Sierra Space startup plan to co-finance the space station but the value of investition was not yet revealed. They also are expecting to sign on NASA as an anchor tenant. New Glenn, the Blue Origin-built rocket that is expected to be powerful and large enough to haul the biggest portions of the space station to orbit, is not yet operational. Multiple space initiatives are prepared at this time. A company called Genesis, as an example, is also working to develop a means of allowing astronauts to conduct spacesuit-free spacewalks by putting people into vacuum sealed pods with robotic arms. Various in-space businesses and products are expected.
