“My ambition is to fly into space. I thought no one would take me, but [Virgin founder] Richard Branson has offered me a seat on Virgin Galactic.” said Hawking into an interview. The Space Ship will be lifted to 50,000 feet, than will rocket into suborbital space, long enough for tourists to experience five minutes of weightlessness before returning to Earth. Virgin Galactic has a reported wait list of 700 people waiting for their chance to experience space. A ticket is reported to cost $250,000. Hawking is suffering of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which causes the death of neurons that control voluntary muscles. While Hawking was certified by multiple doctors to fly, the Federal Aviation Administration expressed concern that he was not able-bodied enough to participate. No target date has been yet set for SpaceShip Two’s first flight.
