Humans are not yet prepared to avoid a catastrophic asteroid collision

2016 has been the year Governments have started to get serious about the threat asteroids pose to Earth. NASA’s Planetary Defense Office was created to do the work preparing to attempt and deflect an asteroid and Lindley Johnson, an US military man, was given the title of planetary defense officer. “The hazard has always been there. It’s just that we began to realize it and understand it more as we were finding asteroids in orbit that came close to Earth orbit,” he said in an interview.

At this time, about 74 per cent of near Earth objects larger than 460 feet still remain to be discovered. More dedicated satellites were required to monitor space for hazardous objects, NASA argued. A fact is predictable: it’s only a matter of time before a massive asteroid strike occurs on our world.
