The dead star was destroying its own planet. Andrew Vanderburg, a graduate student at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, first made the discovery in March while analyzing data from the Kepler Spacecraft. This discovery validates a long-held theory that white dwarfs are capable of cannibalising possible remnant planets that have survived within its solar system. Billions of years from now, our sun will burn through all of its nuclear fuel and shrivel into a stellar corpse known as a white dwarf too. It’s supposed that the fading star will consume Earth and any other rocky bodies that remain in its deadly orbit. The research , which was published in the journal Nature, provides insights into the life cycles of stars and planets.
