Until now, this was a $720 million mission. One possible project linked to New Horizons could be “to explore the deep reaches of the heliosphere,” an area extending far beyond the orbit of Pluto”, according to principal investigator Alan Stern. The first images transmitted revealed that Pluto has 11,000-foot-high mountains of frozen water dusted with a veneer of nitrogen, methane and carbon monoxide ice amid smooth plains and jumbled terrain that defies easy explanation, as scientists reported Wednesday. “The most stunning thing about this image, the most striking geologically, is we have not yet found a single impact crater in this image,” said co-investigator John Spencer. But many other unexpected aspects can occur.
