Syracuse University has researched this and as part of a public experiment managed to use Luciferin and luciferase to create decent lighting. Previous experiments done by other researchers in the past did not achieve a certain level of performance meaning the created lighting was bad.

The team of researchers from the University had genetically modified Luciferase attached to nanorods that formed a core of semiconductor material. People have compared this process to the use of quantum dots because of the use of quantum rods.

The nanorod glows by applying the missing ingredient: Luciferin (the fuel). The released energy caused by the interaction of the chemical components gives the glow we all see.
