The action of the stem cells and that of their controlling organizing cells were studied for almost 20 years all around the world. Plant researchers at VIB and Ghent University discovered a new protein, called “the ERF 115 transcription factor.” When the organizing cells need to divide to replace damaged surrounding stem cells, this protein gets activated. It’s like ERF 115 acts as a back-up system. This discovery breaks the limits of the human knowledge about the essential mechanisms of life.
Ghent University is one of the larger Flemish universities, in Belgium, Dutch-speaking ,consisting of 38,000 students and 7,900 staff members. The university  was opened on October 9, 1817. VIB is a life sciences research institute, based in Flanders, Belgium.
