Unilever United States has recalled some 19 aerosol dry shampoos produced prior to October 2021 because of the potential presence of elevated levels of benzene, a chemical that can cause cancer. According to the company’s statement, an internal investigation identified the propellant as the source of the benzene. Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI and TRESemmé are included. Dove Dry Shampoo Volume and Fullness, Dove Dry Shampoo Fresh Coconut, Nexxus Dry Shampoo Refreshing Mist and Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo Refresh and Revive are examples. They were distributed nationwide in the U.S. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin, and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer.
Unilever said it has not received any reports of adverse reactions to the recalled products but they are being recalled out of caution. Instructions on how to receive reimbursement for eligible products are on the website UnileverRecall.com.
