Time magazine has named Elon Musk as Person of the Year in 2021

Time magazine has named CEO of Tesla and SpaceX as Person of the Year. “In 2021, Musk emerged not just as the world’s richest person but also as perhaps the richest example of a massive shift in our society,” Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal wrote. Introducing Musk as Person of the Year, Felsenthal called attention to his “persona,” describing it as a “blunt instrument that often seems to revel in division and aggressive mockery,” which the public sees through his frequent use of Twitter. And the argument for their choice ? “He tosses satellites into orbit and harnesses the sun; he drives a car he created that uses no gas and barely needs a driver. With a flick of his finger, the stock market soars or swoons.” Musk was a key player in PayPal’s rise. In 2002 he founded SpaceX and a few years later was an early investor in electric car company Tesla, which he now runs. Musk’s other projects include Neuralink, the Boring Company and SolarCity. Time is hosting an event Monday evening in New York to celebrate Time’s Person of the Year and its TIME100 community.

The magazine also honors vaccine scientists who tackled COVID-19 as their heroes of the year. Olympic and world champion gymnast Simone Biles was named athlete of the year. In the history, since 1929, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were named Person of the Year in 2020. Others who have as Person of the Year include Charles Lindbergh, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, the American soldier, Queen Elizabeth II, Mark Zuckerberg, Greta Thunberg and even Adolph Hitler – because not only the good things are considered to make the choice.
