A regular bus coming from the Black Sea province of Zonguldak lost control and overturned on the Balikesir Highway en route to Edremit in the western Balikesir province, western Turkey. early in the morning on Sunday. The incident happened at 4.40am local time (0140 GMT). TV pictures showed the damaged bus in a meadow off the road. Emergency units arrived at the site. 15 people died and 17 were wounded. The injured were rushed to nearby five hospitals. The bus belonging to travel company Efe Tur was traveling from Zonguldak in northern Turkey to Izmir in western Turkey. Balıkesir Governor Hasan Şıldak and local administrators examined the site of the accident and visited the wounded in hospitals where they were being treated.
An investigation to determine the cause of the accident is underway. No other details were immediately available.The passenger bus was lifted with a crane. This was the second large accident involving a bus in Turkey over the past two days. On Saturday, nine people were killed and 30 others were injured as a regular bus crashed in the country’s western province of Manisa. Across the country, 4,866 people were killed in traffic accidents last year and another 226,266 people suffered injuries, according to figures by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).
