A judge in King County, Washington, signed off on their divorce Monday. “This marriage is irretrievably broken,” the filing reads. the former couple shares adult children. Court records show that neither party will change their name or receive “spousal support.” The couple’s divorce agreement was pursuant to a separation contract, which is not public. The exact details of their agreement remain a mystery. Bill and Melinda noted that they planned to continue to work together at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the largest charitable foundations in the world. Following the announcement of their divorce, Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates committed an additional $15 billion to the foundation which has become one of the most powerful and influential forces in global public health.
The Gateses have backed widely praised programs in malaria and polio eradication, child nutrition and vaccines. The foundation last year committed some $1.75 billion to COVID-19 relief.
