Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, possibly poisoned, is in a coma

A plane from Tomsk to Mosacow carrying between others the Russian opposition figure made an emergency landing in Omsk because he fell ill and was suspected poisoning. It’s believed something had been mixed into his tea, the only thing he drank. Mr Navalny, 44, who is known as a critic of Putin, is now in coma in a Siberian hospital. “Doctors are saying that the toxic agent absorbed faster through the hot liquid. Right now Alexei is unconscious,” Kira Yarmysh, the press secretary for the Anti-Corruption Foundation, which Mr Navalny founded in 2011, tweeted.

The deputy head physician of the hospital later told media that it was not certain Mr Navalny had been poisoned, although “natural poisoning” was one of the diagnoses being considered. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it wished the critic a speedy recovery. A photograph on social media purports to show Mr Navalny drinking from a cup at a Tomsk airport cafe. In the past years, Navalny has been the target of years of harassment, including numerous arrests and a previous suspected poisoning. Navalny campaigned to challenge Putin in the 2018 presidential election, but was barred from running.
