Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and President Biden’s chief medical adviser, has tested positive for Covid-19 and is experiencing mild symptoms. Fauci was scheduled to speak Thursday at a hearing of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on the status of the federal response to Covid-19 and plans to manage the pandemic but he will attend by videoconference. Fauci, 81 years old, has been working nonstop during the pandemic. He is the director of NIAID since 1984. But unexpected things happen even to the most advised people when it is about Covid 19. Now he will work from home until he tests negative. He is being treated with the antiviral medication Paxlovid.
Dr Pauci has not been in close contact with President Biden. He is fully vaccinated and has received two booster shots. Fauci said in April that the United States has moved out of the “full-blown pandemic phase” of fighting the coronavirus, as vaccines and antiviral treatments have limited complications and deaths from contracting an infection. However, Covid infections are surging in the U.S. again, driven by the highly contagious omicron variant. The average number of new infections a day has held steady over 100,000 since the end of May.
