The company Ravgen publised a paper describing the process in the New England Journal of Medicine. The paternity tests require only blood samples from the mother and some from the father.

The purpose of the test is to identify DNA fragments of the fetus inside the mother’s blood. These are then extracted and analyzed so that they can be later compared to the DNA of the potential father.
