“To circumcise a child without medical reasons and without the child’s consent runs contrary (…) to the child’s human rights and the fundamental principles of medical ethics” said Sweden’s children’s Ombudsman Frederik Malmberg.
Medical officials argued that circumcision is in contravention of article 12 of the U.M.Convention on the Rights of the Child and asked for a change in Swedish legislation to be made.
Male circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin from the human penis. The procedure is made for religions reasons or personal option (in adult cases). It generally applies to very young boys. It has some therapeutic and prophylactic reasons in some determined circumstances. About one third of males worldwide are circumcised. The procedure is very frequent in the Muslim world and is near universal in Israel as part of religious law in Judaism.
