Another way not to use insulin (which is incriminated as fat-inducing for patients) is to replace it with a special hormone. By injecting leptin to a group of rodents, scientists at the University of Geneva discovered that fat reserves and appetite can be regulated this way. The glucose regulating properties of leptin are controlled, in this case, by the hypothalamus. The results obtained are a promise for humans soon.
Other researches used Alfacept (a skin drug for the treatment of psoriasis) as a substitution treatment for type-1 diabetes. After a 36 week trial, patients were able to regulate better their insulin level.
