He had a history of heart problems and also was a drinker and a heavy smoker. He has been a working actor since 1997 in the 1997 TV movie “Ballyseedy”. Before moving to Hollywood, O’Neill became a household name in his native Ireland.
He appeared in the sixth and final seventh season of Sons of Anarchy, played in the films Urge and was in Irish soap Fair City from 2006-2012. O’Neill also appeared on “Undercovers” in 2010 as well as “Shadow Dancer” and short “Invisible,” both in 2012. His manager Greg Meyer released a statement reading: “He was a great guy who was very funny and engaging as well as a very talented actor. He was also an expert equestrian horse trainer.” O’Neill’s agent Annette Walsh described him as brilliant and funny. Posting on Twitter, co-star Timothy Murphy wrote: “My good friend Alan O’Neill died today…We worked together on The Sons of Anarchy…my condolences to his family.” The cause of his death has yet to be announced.
