At the time of his death, Jon was better known around the Oregon music scene as Jonny P. Jewels with his band, P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S. His death was announced on the Facebook page of his Portland, Oregon, rock band.

In 1993 he got a role in Grace Under Fire but left the series in 1996. “I had never really gotten into acting for the stardom or the fame or the attention,” he said in an interview. After ending his acting career, Jon moved to Denver, and in 2003, he formed the band Kill City Thrillers, which was changed in Soda Pop Kids. He was appreciated but in 2009 the group disbanded and he went on to take part in a number of other musical projects. In addition to his singing career, Steuer also was a restaurateur in Portland. In 2015, Steuer opened Harvest at the Bindery, a vegan restaurant in Northeast Portland. He also DJ’d around town, frequently at Star Bar.
