To prove everyone wrong the movie had an unexpected debut and managed to nab on the opening Friday $25.6 million. The $125 million franchise reboot was expected to produce around $40-$45 million for this first weekend. Given the results from Friday it is now estimated that the movie will earn close to $65 million for the entire weekend.
Guardians of the Galaxy was among the movies Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles competed against. This movie was heavily advertised and to make things worst the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles already had some poor reviews. At the moment of writing the movie has a score of 6.4 on IMDB. Paramount basically ensured the success of the movie by executing a carefully timed and restrained campaign. The marketing strategy could have very well backfired but Paramount knew the fact that the vast majority of younger movie-goers (an expected majority) were not going to care about the vast array of subjects that ultimately led to the early poor reviews for the movie.
